Architectural Photography: From Seeing to Shooting—A Practical Workflow
We’ll be focusing on architectural photography as a practical workflow — from pre-planning and client communication through capture, technical execution, and post-production. The emphasis is on making clear decisions that support consistency, efficiency, and reliable real-world results.
Pre-planning covers client goals, usage restrictions, scheduling constraints, and the realities of the space. We’ll look at how communication, weather, and timing shape creative outcomes and reduce friction on site.
We’ll explore how to evaluate space and light, choose camera positions and perspectives, manage verticals and distortion, and establish dependable camera settings. Common challenges such as mixed lighting, dynamic range, reflections, time pressure, and spatial limitations are addressed with practical strategies that support speed and consistency.
Post-production ties the process together. We’ll discuss organizing, processing, and refining files efficiently while preserving architectural accuracy, color integrity, and visual clarity, building repeatable systems that support predictable, sustainable production.
Participants leave with clear frameworks they can apply immediately.
About Colby McLemore
Colby McLemore is a commercial photographer based in Knoxville, Tennessee, specializing in advertising photography with regional architectural and hospitality work. He began his career photographing cabins and homes in Sevier County for realtors, rental cabin companies, and property owners, developing strong problem-solving skills and production efficiency in real-world conditions.
Today, Colby primarily photographs resorts, hotels, and businesses for advertising and branding. His architectural work supports broader commercial storytelling rather than standalone documentation, translating space and experience into clear, effective visuals.
His approach emphasizes disciplined workflow, thoughtful pre-planning, and strong on-site decision-making, from early client communication through capture and post-production. These same systems form the foundation of his teaching.
Colby has taught architectural photography at the University of Tennessee and regularly leads all-day workshops and convention presentations across the United States. Known for a clear, practical teaching style, he helps photographers build confidence, consistency, and repeatable production systems.
